EEB Academy

For two weeks this summer (June 9th - 20th), local high school juniors from Dulles Math and Science Academy explored the research labs of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Rice University as a part of its annual internship program dubbed “EEB Academy.” This graduate student run, developed, and coordinated program is designed to give high school students a hands-on crash course on the scientific method and introduces techniques often used in research such as microscopy, histology, DNA extraction/analysis, field sampling, and experimental design. By the end of the internship students are able to discuss scientific literature, analyze simple data sets, interpret results, and present upon their research experiences to graduate students and faculty.

“The internship gave great insights and very good perspective into how research is done from start to finish as a large grand process that requires much consideration, thought and work.“ –EEB Academy graduate 2013
